EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND METHODS:
Sediment cores were obtained in the field and transported to the laboratory for analysis within 24 hr.
Cores for were sectioned by depth into intervals defined by an "INT TOP" and "INT BOT" entry, with the midpoint of the interval given as depth. Intervals and depth are given as negative numbers to indicate depth below sediment surface. Portions of sediment were dried and analyzed on a Perkin Elmer Elemental Analyzer for carbon and nitrogen content, after acidifying samples to remove carbonates.
Additional cores were sectioned for pigment analysis. Wet sediments were frozen and later analyzed for chlorophyll a and phaeopigment concentrations by extraction with acetone and sonication.
