Saw Mill Brook

PIE LTER year 2016, 15 minute measurements of specific conductance, water temperature in a small headwater stream draining a highly suburban catchment (72% residential), Saw Mill Brook, Burlington, MA.

Abstract:

Year 2016, continuous measurements, every 15 minutes were made of conductivity, water temperature in a small headwater stream, Saw Mill Brook, Burlington, MA, draining a highly suburban catchment (72% residential) in the Ipswich River watershed. Due to sedimentation within the datalogger housing, there are periods when the datalogger lost hydrological connection with the stream (i.e., during low flow). As such, data has been flagged to remove these erroneous readings.

Methods:

Conductivity and water temperature were measured using a HOBO datalogger inside a perforated PVC pipe along the south bank of the stream channel.

Specific conductance was calculated using a conductivity assistant in the HOBOware software.

NOTES AND COMMENTS: Due to sedimentation within the datalogger housing, there are periods when the datalogger lost hydrological connection with the stream. That is, during low flow, exchange of between the housing of this datalogger and the stream was limited by diffusion through sediments. This disconnection affects conductivity measuremnts as porewater conducitivty can be altered from the stream as a whole. Temperature is not affected by this disconnection.  As such, data has been flagged to remove these erroneous conductivity readings.

FLAGS:
1 -- Datalogger malfunction
2 -- Datalogger not deployed
3 -- Datalogger not hydrologically connected to stream.
